{"id":53866,"date":"2016-07-26T21:01:16","date_gmt":"2016-07-26T21:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=53866"},"modified":"2016-07-28T15:47:30","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T15:47:30","slug":"microsoft-denies-security-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/microsoft-denies-security-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Denies Security Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two researchers have found a major security gap in Windows 10, and Microsoft has no plans to address it&#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laptopmag.com\/articles\/windows-10-flaw-leaves-door-open-malware\">Laptop Magazine<\/a>, two security researchers, Matt Graeber and Matt Nelson,\u00a0found a security vulnerability in the Windows 10 User Account Controls (UAC).\u00a0 The UAC function is\u00a0to block unwanted programs and malware from executing.\u00a0 However,\u00a0the\u00a0security issue involves how the SilentCleanup process can be leveraged to allow malware to bypass the UAC.\u00a0 Graeber and Nelson outlined this flaw on the <a href=\"https:\/\/enigma0x3.net\/2016\/07\/22\/bypassing-uac-on-windows-10-using-disk-cleanup\/\">Enigmaox3 website<\/a>; however Microsoft is denying the problem creates any kind of security gaps, as they do not categorize the UAC as a security feature.<\/p>\n<p>If Microsoft does not see it as a security issue, then what exactly are the security researchers claiming?\u00a0 First, the magnitude of the issue\u00a0is the privilege rights within\u00a0system itself.\u00a0 The vulnerability allows malware to get into the SilentCleanup which works within the Disk Cleanup.\u00a0 The SilentCleanup and Disk Cleanup run at the highest privilege, meaning if any kind of malware is given access, it can corrupt your entire system.\u00a0 Graeber and Nelson suggested Microsoft decrease these rights, if they indeed have no intentions to fix the security holes.\u00a0 By doing so, the amount of damage able to be done is reduced, if and when a malware attack takes place.<\/p>\n<p>Now, to the root of the problem, how the malware actually gets into the system.\u00a0 The Disk Cleanup\u00a0creates a temporary folder filled with Dynamic Link Library (.DLL)\u00a0files.\u00a0 Since Windows gives users write-level access to this temporary directory, Graeber and Nelson discovered that any other .DLL could be dropped into this folder, and then run with the highest privileges.<\/p>\n<p>So, if a user becomes a victim of a hacker dropping a malicious .DLLs file into their Disk Cleanup, they&#8217;re entire system will become infected.\u00a0 I spoke with PC Matic&#8217;s Vice President of Cyber Security, Dodi Glenn,\u00a0to determine what could be done to prevent infections, since Microsoft doesn&#8217;t plan to address the vulnerability.\u00a0 He reported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pc_matic_windows10\/?\">PC Matic<\/a> as a valid security solution.\u00a0 Here is exactly what\u00a0Dodi had to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you&#8217;re utilizing Windows 10, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pc_matic_windows10\/?\">PC Matic<\/a> proactively protects your computer from crippling executables and DLLs by scanning these files prior to execution. PC Matic features an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/whitelist\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\">intelligent whitelist technology<\/span><\/a>, blocking any malicious DLLs and unknown applications from ever infecting your system.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is an option to disable the UAC feature where this vulnerability is found.\u00a0 Graeber and Nelson provide a <a href=\"https:\/\/enigma0x3.net\/2016\/07\/22\/bypassing-uac-on-windows-10-using-disk-cleanup\/\">step-by-step guide<\/a> on how to do so; however,\u00a0I will warn you, it appears to be rather
