The latest\u00a0hacking\u00a0trend goes hand in hand with ransomware.\u00a0 It’s\u00a0called ranscam.\u00a0 Find out what it is and how to avoid becoming the\u00a0next victim…<\/p>\n

Ranscam is fairly self-explanatory.\u00a0 It worms its way into your computer, and sends you a ransom demand similar to ransomware.\u00a0 One major difference, however, is that they don’t encrypt your files.\u00a0 They just delete them.\u00a0 Of course you are not told that.\u00a0 The demand made to “get your files back” is unknown, but researchers found payments of just under $300\u00a0made to a wallet address.<\/p>\n

Cisco Talos<\/a> research team believes this trend is going to die out quickly due to the negative reputation it withholds.\u00a0 They also reported these attacks are not as sophisticated as well known ransomware variants such as the Crypto series.\u00a0 The sole purpose of these attacks is to simply make a quick buck.<\/p>\n

This triggers a few questions.\u00a0 How do\u00a0you know if you have ransomware or ranscam?\u00a0 You don’t.\u00a0 How can\u00a0you be certain you\u00a0will\u00a0get your files back after the payment demands are met?\u00a0 You can’t.\u00a0 The reality is, you’re paying a criminal, who I would guess is not the most honest and trustworthy person, or they probably wouldn’t be a criminal.\u00a0 They don’t care about your files, family pictures, videos, etc.\u00a0 They care about money.\u00a0 Once they get that, the rest doesn’t matter.<\/p>\n

Every time you send a hacker money in an attempt to get your files back, whether it’s a ransom demand from ransomware or ranscam, you are gambling.\u00a0 Nothing ensures you will get your files back, and sending the criminal money only fuels the fire for them to continue their attacks.<\/p>\n

If you find yourself the victim of a ransomware attack, we urge you to follow these five steps:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Do not pay the ransom<\/b> \u2013 If you do, you\u2019re just giving the hackers a reason to keep hacking.\u00a0 Use your back up files to restore your systems.\u00a0 Again, don\u2019t pay!!<\/li>\n
  2. Inform the FBI<\/strong> \u2013 By informing the FBI they can investigate to potentially bring legal action against the hacker.\u00a0 All cyber criminal activity should be reported to the federal IC3 agency.\u00a0 You can file a complaint with them here<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  3. Notify your current security software company<\/strong> \u2013 You also MUST inform your security software company.\u00a0 If they didn\u2019t know they missed a malicious attack, they cannot stop it in the future.\u00a0 Also, many anti-virus software companies share their blacklist, or the list of known bad files.\u00a0 So by sharing it with your software company, they then share it with others; saving thousands of people from falling victim to the same attack that just got you.<\/li>\n
  4. Educate yourselves and your employees <\/strong>\u2013 Many times we attend one training, or listen to one webinar and consider ourselves educated on the matter.\u00a0 This cannot be further from the truth.\u00a0 Continued education on current cyber security threats is imperative.\u00a0 We recommend our friends at KnowBe4 <\/a>for both personal and enterprise training on cyber security.\u00a0 As always, all PC Matic home\u00a0security subscribers are offered a free cyber security training<\/a> through KnowBe4 as well.<\/li>\n
  5.
