{"id":53361,"date":"2016-05-17T19:06:23","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T19:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=53361"},"modified":"2016-05-17T19:10:56","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T19:10:56","slug":"latest-tech-support-scam-resembles-ransomware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/latest-tech-support-scam-resembles-ransomware\/","title":{"rendered":"Latest Tech Support Scam Resembles Ransomware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest tech support scam has a striking resemblance to the ransomware concept&#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The latest tech support scam resembles ransomware by completely locking your PC.\u00a0 It starts with what you believe is an update to Flash Player or PC Optimize.\u00a0 These updates include useless toolbars, and at times this ransomware-like malware.\u00a0 The malware sits dormant until the user restarts their PC.\u00a0 During the restarting process, the user sees the screen below.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-53362 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-1.png\" alt=\"Capture\" width=\"750\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-1.png 750w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-1-300x149.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the &#8220;update&#8221; is complete, the user gets an alert stating\u00a0their Windows license key has expired with a phone number to call.\u00a0 Once the user calls, the hackers easily obtain the user&#8217;s personal information and credit card information and refuse to unlock the computer until a payment of $250 USD is paid.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neowin.net\/news\/tech-support-scammers-now-utilizing-ransomware-like-lock-screens-to-threaten-people\">Neowin<\/a>, researchers were able to successfully unlock their own screens by pressing Ctrl+Shift and then the S key.\u00a0 There are also multiple &#8220;product key codes&#8221;
