Your ISP is Probably Not Calling<\/h4>\n

Hi Leo,
\nYou might be interested in this little anecdote.
\nYesterday about noon, the telephone rang. It was an Indian woman, and here\u2019s what she said \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What follows is an increasingly commonly-attempted scam. Fortunately, the person reporting it had the right instincts and was able to avoid getting taken.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at the transcript provided, and I\u2019ll identify all of the warning signs with [notes] as we go.<\/p>\n

The \u201cyour computer is causing problems\u201d scam<\/p>\n

Before we get into the specifics of this example, I want to clarify that this scam has become increasingly widespread, and has many variants. In the five years since this article was originally published, it\u2019s clear that it\u2019s happening more and more often, and many people are falling for it.<\/p>\n

While this example is a call from \u201cyour ISP\u201d, variations include scammers claiming to be calling from Microsoft, from \u201cthe internet\u201d, from security firms, and from other reputable-sounding organizations.<\/p>\n

Except they\u2019re not reputable at all. They lie. It\u2019s a scam. They are not who they say they are at all.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t fall for it.<\/p>\n

If you take away only one thing from this example, let it be this: always be suspicious when someone calls you. You have no way to confirm that they are who they say they are. I\u2019ll have some tips on what steps to take in a moment.<\/p>\n
