{"id":50871,"date":"2015-05-12T20:17:55","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T20:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=50871"},"modified":"2015-05-14T01:24:30","modified_gmt":"2015-05-14T01:24:30","slug":"hard-drives-losing-data-without-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/hard-drives-losing-data-without-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Hard Drives Losing Data Without Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/br><\/p>\n<h4>Hard Drives Losing Data Without Power<\/h4>\n<p>A recently uncovered flaw in solid-state drives &#8211; shows these drives to be potentially vulnerable to data loss.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Solid-state drives lose data if left without power for just a few days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New research suggests that newer solid-state hard drives, which are faster and offer better performance, are vulnerable to an inherent flaw &#8212; they lose data when they&#8217;re left dormant in storage for periods of time where the temperature isn&#8217;t properly regulated.<\/br><\/p>\n<p>The worrying factor is that the period of time can be weeks, months, but even in some circumstances &#8212; just a few days.<\/br><\/p>\n<p>Solid-state drives are better than regular mechanical hard drives, which are slow and sluggish. But unless they&#8217;re battered around, smashed, or poured in acid, they pretty much last forever.<\/br><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jedec.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Alvin_Cox%20%5BCompatibility%20Mode%5D_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">recent presentation<\/a> by hard drive maker Seagate&#8217;s Alvin Cox warned that the period of time data is retained on some solid-state drives is halved for every 9\u00b0F (or 5\u00b0C) rise in temperature where its stored.<\/br><\/p>\n<p>That means if a solid-state drive is stored in a warm room, say 77\u00b0F (25\u00b0C), its data can last for about two years.
