{"id":49137,"date":"2014-08-25T21:08:17","date_gmt":"2014-08-25T21:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=49137"},"modified":"2014-08-25T21:08:17","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T21:08:17","slug":"pc-answers-front-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/pc-answers-front-face\/","title":{"rendered":"Better PC Answers In Front of Your Face"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><i><font SIZE=\"2\">Sometimes the best answer to your PC problems is right in front of your face.&#8211;PC Pitstop<\/i><\/font>.<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<h4>Better PC Answers In Front of Your Face<\/h4>\n<p><em>Get Better, Faster Answers by Reading What\u2019s in Front of You<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By Leo Notenboom<\/p>\n<p>I vent a little about people missing what&#8217;s right in front of them (including myself), and then discuss why taking the time to read what your machine is telling you is so important to a less frustrating experience with your technology.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that frustrates me occasionally in the questions that I\u2019m asked is something I\u2019m also guilty of myself: not reading what\u2019s right in front of my face.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than only venting about it, I want to talk a little bit about why it\u2019s so important to read and follow instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Because it\u2019s obvious that so many people do not. (And, yeah, like I said, sometimes that includes me.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<\/p>\n<p><strong>The question that started this<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This morning as I was reviewing questions in the Ask Leo! question queue, I came across this one:<\/p>\n<p>How i solve this problem sir pls! I use windows 7!-<\/p>\n<p>A problem has<br \/>\nbeen detected and windows has<br \/>\nbeen shut down to prevent<br \/>\ndamage to your computer.<br \/>\nUNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME<br \/>\nIf this is the first time you\u2019ve seen<br \/>\nthis stop error screen, restart your<br \/>\ncomputer. If this screen appears<br \/>\nagain. Follow these steps: _ _ _<\/p>\n<p>That was the entire question. (I did not respond, for reasons that will become apparent.)<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve all seen these types of error messages at one time or another. Messages that, essentially tell you exactly what to do next.<\/p>\n<p>My assistant\u2019s proposed response was spot on: \u201cI\u2019d follow the steps described in the error message\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So why didn\u2019t the questioner do that?<\/p>\n<p>And if he did, why didn\u2019t he include that information? After all, the Ask Leo! question form does also include the following instructions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>BE COMPLETE:<\/strong> I require the version of all software involved (particularly Windows), the full text of any error messages, the specific make and model of computer and detailed steps to reproduce the problem you\u2019re seeing. Without enough information you won\u2019t get an answer.
