Powering Down Windows 8<\/h4>\n

I generally just close the lid on my Win8 laptop when I\u2019m done using it, but since it died last time I did that and stuck me in the dreaded Windows 8 recovery mode on restart, I\u2019d like to know what my options are for a proper shutdown, not just a sleep?<\/em><\/p>\n

Windows has a couple of different power modes you should know about, actually, because the options are more than just \u201csleep\u201d or \u201cpower down\u201d. The new one is \u201chibernate\u201d and while I imagine most people don\u2019t use it \u2014 and it\u2019s hard to find! \u2014 it\u2019s good to know your options, right?<\/p>\n

Microsoft explains hibernate this way: \u201cHibernate uses less power than sleep and when you start up the PC again, you\u2019re back to where you left off (though not as fast as sleep). Use hibernation when you know that you won\u2019t use your laptop or tablet for an extended period and won\u2019t have an opportunity to charge the battery during that time. \u201d<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the wrinkle: hibernate and even a power mode kinda like hibernate that\u2019s called \u201chybrid sleep\u201d might not show up as an option even if you\u2019re on an laptop or desktop system. Again, Microsoft explains that your video card might not support \u201csleep\u201d, your admin might have disabled hibernation or your BIOS (basic I\/O subsystem) might not support power saving modes.<\/p>\n
