The answer explains the difference between good and very bad security.&#8211;PC Pitstop<\/i><\/font>.<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why can\u2019t online services tell me what my password is?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s for your own protection, and actually the result of fascinating mathematical wizardry. And if they can tell you your password? They&#8217;re doing security wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Why can\u2019t an online service like Gmail or Hotmail or any of the others, just tell me what my password is rather than forcing me to reset it all the time? I mean, they have to know what it is anyway so that they can check that I\u2019ve entered it in correctly. Right?<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, online services don\u2019t necessarily know your password.<\/p>\n<p>Some services actually can tell you your password, and that\u2019s a really, really bad thing.
