{"id":47060,"date":"2014-01-08T21:25:20","date_gmt":"2014-01-08T21:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=47060"},"modified":"2014-01-09T20:12:28","modified_gmt":"2014-01-09T20:12:28","slug":"latest-alarming-ransomware-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/latest-alarming-ransomware-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Latest Alarming Ransomware Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h4>Latest Alarming Ransomware Development<\/h4>\n<p><strong>DIY Ransomware &#8211; New Threat<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nWhite-hat security research workgroup <a href=\"http:\/\/malwaremustdie.blogspot.ro\/2014\/01\/threat-intelligence-new-locker-prison.html\" target=\"_blank\">MalwareMustDie<\/a> has been following discussions on underground crime forums regarding a new piece of ransomware currently being developed, which will apparently be put on sale for as little as $100.<\/p>\n<p>The developer of the malware has dubbed his creation <strong>Prison Locker<\/strong> and later changed the name to <strong>Power Locker<\/strong>, and has been sharing his progress and details about the malware&#8217;s capabilities in order to drum up interest.&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.net-security.org\/malware_news.php?id=2668\" target=\"_blank\">net-security.org<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>What makes PowerLocker particularly troubling isn\u2019t this \u201cunbreakable encryption.\u201d CryptoLocker does the same thing, after all. There\u2019s no getting your files back without the private key the criminals supply after you cough up the ransom. No, it\u2019s the fact that someone is actively selling a DIY kit that mimics CryptoLocker\u2019s functionality for a ridiculously low price.&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geek.com\/apps\/100-malware-kit-lets-anyone-build-their-own-cryptolocker-1581505\/\" target=\"_blank\">geek.com<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>PowerLocker goes further than Cryptolocker<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8230;PowerLocker goes even further. Once the encryption stage is done, it disables the Windows and Escape keys and prevents a number of other useful utilities like taskmgr.exe, regedit.exe, cmd.exe, explorer.exe and msconfig.exe from being used.<\/p>\n<p>It then uses the functionality in Windows to create a secondary desktop and displays the ransom message there.
