When installing software, including the operating system itself, using the wrong flavor can lead to anything from decreased performance to installations that don&#8217;t work at all.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also important to know what you already have, if for no other reason than to be able to select appropriate software and possibly system updates in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022<\/p>\n<p>Do I have 32-bit or 64-bit?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with determining what flavor of Windows you have.<\/p>\n<p>Click the Start menu\/orb and then right-click on Computer (or &#8220;My Computer&#8221;). You can also simply right-click the Computer icon on your desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/windows7_bitness.png\" alt=\"windows7_bitness\" width=\"600\" height=\"378\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-43194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/windows7_bitness.png 600w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/windows7_bitness-300x189.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><BR CLEAR=LEFT><\/p>\n<p>There, you&#8217;ll see the information indicating whether your system running a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Great, but what about the actual capabilities of your hardware?<\/p>\n<p>For that, we need a separate program. I happen to like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grc.com\/securable.htm\" target=\"_blank\">free utility Securable<\/a> from Steve Gibson out at grc.com.<\/p>\n<p>Download and run the program, and it&#8217;ll display a window like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/securable.png\" alt=\"securable\" width=\"483\" height=\"390\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-43195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/securable.png 483w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/securable-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><BR CLEAR=LEFT><\/p>\n<p>The information includes a few other aspects of your CPU that we need not concern ourselves with right now.
