Earlier, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Right away, I noticed that my 1TB hard drive was almost filled up, and I didn\u2019t understand why.<\/p>\n<p>It is only later that I finally figured out that the Windows.old folder, along with many other files from the previous Windows installation, was taking up a huge chunk of my hard drive. After upgrading to the full version of Windows 8, I tried to delete the Windows.old folder manually, but Windows kept denying me access \u2013 even after changing ownership of the file to myself.<\/p>\n<p>If you are having this issue as well, here\u2019s how you can delete the previous Windows installations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Head on over to the Windows Start page (press the Window key) and search for \u201cdisk cleaner\u201d or \u201cdisk cleanup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Select Settings underneath the search box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> In the results, choose the option that says \u201cFree up disk space by deleting unnecessary files.\u201d This will bring up the Disk Cleanup utility.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/delete-previous-windows-free-up-disk-space.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"delete-previous-windows-free-up-disk-space\" width=\"534\" height=\"284\"
