Unfortunately, not everything has an icon. If you try to make a shortcut to lock your computer, if you don\u2019t know the actual convention for calling its function through a Windows library, you won\u2019t get anywhere. This tutorial will teach you how to make a couple of shortcuts to useful functions on your computer that you normally have to go through a longer process to reach. You will learn how to lock your computer, enable\/disable your firewall, reach the \u201cSafely Remove Hardware\u201d dialog, and a couple of other functions through the use of Windows shortcuts! Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Lock Your Computer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you need to go out and you don\u2019t want anyone snooping around your computer, you can either lock it or shut it down. Of course, you also need a password on your account to make this completely effective. This way, anyone trying to intrude on your computer will be blocked by a password dialog and won\u2019t be able to access your information. It\u2019s very useful for office computers. Locking your computer normally involves going through the Start menu, sifting through the shutdown menu, and clicking \u201cLock.\u201d Instead of doing all this, create a shortcut with the following location:<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Enable\/Disable Windows Firewall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps locking your computer from the Start menu isn\u2019t a big deal, but there\u2019s a long process to go through if you want to work with your firewall. You\u2019ll have to reach a dialog in the control panel.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/winshort-firewall-300x256.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"winshort-firewall\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-38682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/winshort-firewall-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/winshort-firewall.png 621w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><BR CLEAR=LEFT><\/p>\n<p>Instead, you can create two shortcuts in your desktop. The following \u201clocation\u201d will disable the firewall:<\/p>\n<p><em>netsh firewall set opmode disable<\/em><br \/>\nTo create a shortcut that enables the firewall, just change \u201cdisable\u201d in the command to \u201cenable.\u201d When you\u2019re done creating both shortcuts, you have to make them run as Administrator by right-clicking an icon, clicking \u201cProperties,\u201d and navigating to the \u201cShortcut\u201d tab. After clicking the \u201cAdvanced\u201d button, you can enable the option to \u201cRun as administrator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Safely Remove Hardware<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When unplugging a vital device connected to your computer via USB, you have to go through the system tray on the taskbar.
