{"id":38622,"date":"2012-10-18T17:45:14","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T17:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=38622"},"modified":"2013-04-01T17:18:13","modified_gmt":"2013-04-01T17:18:13","slug":"windows-update-clean-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/windows-update-clean-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Update &#8211; Clean Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><em>Tip submitted by Jacee on <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.pcpitstop.com\/index.php?\/topic\/200097-updating-windows-xp-vista-and-win7\/\" target=\"_blank\">October 13 2012<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><h2>Windows Update &#8211; Clean Up<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>This tip works &#8230; first,download TFC by Old Timer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekstogo.com\/forum\/files\/file\/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.geekstogo.com\/forum\/files\/file\/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer\/<\/a> and save it to your desktop.<br \/>\n<strong>Save any unsaved work.<\/strong> TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!<br \/>\nDouble-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista\/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.<\/p>\n<p>Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.<br \/>\n<em>Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately.<br \/>\n**If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After rebooting\/restarting your computer, click on &#8220;Windows Updates&#8221;. Choose maybe 8 or 10 at a time to update. DO NOT try to update all of them at one time! <\/p>\n<p>Repeat the process of Windows updating again, choosing a few at a time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does cleaning out Temp folders have to do with windows updates?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has a ton to do with WUD (Windows Updates Downloader)!!  You would be surprised.<\/p>\n<p>If I don&#8217;t clean all temps, and reboot, then I see some update errors. I&#8217;ve used TFC on all three of my computers (XP Home SP3, Vista Business SP2 and Win7 SP1 Ultimate) with excellent results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be aware of .NET updates!<\/strong> Susan Bradley gives her &#8216;update&#8217; patch info and chart info in her column on &#8220;Windows Secrets&#8221;.
