{"id":33965,"date":"2012-07-02T18:42:17","date_gmt":"2012-07-02T18:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=33965"},"modified":"2012-07-02T18:42:17","modified_gmt":"2012-07-02T18:42:17","slug":"windows-secrets-windows-8-home-stretch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/windows-secrets-windows-8-home-stretch\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Secrets: Windows 8 in the Home Stretch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/longroad.jpg\" alt=\"windows 8 home stretch\" title=\"windows 8 home stretch\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33969\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Woody Leonhard\/Windows Secrets Newsletter<\/p>\n<h2>The Next Steps for Windows 8<\/h2>\n<p>Work on Windows 8 is in the home stretch, but predicting its success is still pure speculation \u2014 probably more so than with any previous Windows release.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s announcement that it will build and sell its own Windows 8 computers just adds more drama to an already opaque roll-out schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we\u2019re going to see in the next few months<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019ve been working with Windows 8 for four months now \u2014 16 hours a day, seven days a week. I\u2019m putting together the thickest book I\u2019ve ever written, as befits the thickest operating system I\u2019ve ever used. My perspective is that of a regular, everyday Windows 8 home and business user running salt-of-the-earth applications. Nothing fancy.<\/p>\n<p>What I\u2019ve seen to date isn\u2019t comforting for experienced Windows users. In the March 8 Top Story, I talked about the problems at length: no Start menu, the new tiles on the main screen, finger-friendly features, and a lot of glamour and glitz (none of which has changed significantly in the past three months).<\/p>\n<p>What has changed \u2014 potentially turning the Windows world on its ear, actually \u2014 is Microsoft\u2019s announcement that it\u2019s entering the tablet business with two \u201cMicrosoft Surface\u201d devices. That\u2019s a kick in the face for HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, and all the other hardware manufacturers who seem to be sailing along in a me-too, minor-upgrade mode. The new tablets \u2014 one for Windows RT (the ARM-device version), the other for Windows 8 Pro \u2014 are complete departures from Windows machines currently on the market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pause for a primer on Windows 8 versions<\/strong><br \/>\nWindows RT doesn\u2019t have a Windows 7\u2013style desktop, and it doesn\u2019t run the kinds of programs you\u2019re running right now. You can run only Metro-style programs on a Windows RT computer, and they must come from the Microsoft store. Most of what we know about Windows RT has come from Microsoft and from demos on tablets (such as the recently announced Surface with a detachable keyboard) or on devices that look like Ultrabooks with docking keyboards.<\/p>\n<p>Windows RT runs on ARM chips, not on the Intel\/AMD chips found in traditional PCs. Supposedly, ARM chips aren\u2019t as powerful, power-hungry, or hot as Intel\/AMD chips, which is why they\u2019re used in mobile devices.
