{"id":319,"date":"2005-01-17T16:31:30","date_gmt":"2005-01-17T21:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=319"},"modified":"2005-01-17T16:31:30","modified_gmt":"2005-01-17T21:31:30","slug":"pc-pitstop-privacy-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/pc-pitstop-privacy-center\/","title":{"rendered":"PC Pitstop Privacy Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nProtecting your personal information and privacy on the Internet can be a major challenge.<br \/>\nTo use the Internet effectively for shopping, banking, and communication, you will need<br \/>\nto give out personal and financial information at times.<br \/>\nHow do you know when it&#8217;s safe to give out information, and how can you protect<br \/>\nyourself from that information falling into the wrong hands?<br \/>\nAs you use your PC, it will keep track of your personal information and browsing history.<br \/>\nHow do you remove that information to prevent it from being misused?\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<a href=\"?p=316\">Protect yourself from phishing<\/a> and identity theft.<br \/>\nFalling for an innocent-looking email can let a criminal steal your money and good name.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"?p=318\">Find out what your PC knows<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis data could be stolen off the PC by spyware, or taken by someone snooping on your PC.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"?p=315\">Remove information that you don&#8217;t need or want to be revealed<\/a>.<br \/>\nIf it could cause embarrassment or financial loss, do you want it on your computer?\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"?p=314\">Set up your PC for better privacy<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis is especially important if you share a PC, or if it is in a place where many<br \/>\npeople may be able to access it when you are not around.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcpitstop.com\/\/store\/erase.asp\">Use our privacy scan<\/a> to see what information your PC has collected.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Guilty Unless Proven Innocent<\/h3>\n<p>\nIt is almost inevitable that your computer will accumulate some<br \/>\nunwanted debris as you surf the Internet.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s easy to follow an innocent-looking link from a search engine and<br \/>\nend up on an unsavory site; some adult-oriented and spyware distribution<br \/>\nsites use common search terms to lure people to click.<br \/>\nSomeone using your PC, or just watching you as you use it,<br \/>\nmay see these items and jump to incorrect conclusions.<br \/>\nPerhaps the worst that you&#8217;ll suffer is some embarrassment; if that&#8217;s all that<br \/>\nhappens then consider yourself extremely lucky.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLong after the web browser is closed, images and web pages stick around<br \/>\non the PC in places like the browser&#8217;s cache or Recycle Bin.<br \/>\nInnocent people have found themselves the subject of<br \/>\n<a target=\"blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2005\/02\/08\/computer_forensics_disklabs\/\">police investigations<\/a><br \/>\nbecause of pornographic material deposited onto their systems by spyware.<br \/>\nAnd if you think that people are just making excuses to cover up their<br \/>\nown behavior, explain why this grandmother would go<br \/>\n<a target=_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/news\/infostructure\/0,1377,63280,00.html\">surfing for porn<\/a>.<br \/>\nYou don&#8217;t want to be in the position of proving that you are innocent,<br \/>\nbut these threats will put you in exactly that position.\n<\/p>\n<h3>Be In Control, Not Scared<\/h3>\n<p>\nClearly, there are many potential threats to your privacy when it comes to PCs,<br \/>\nbut there are privacy threats in non-PC activities as well.<br \/>\nThe best defense is not to abandon the Internet, but to learn how to protect yourself<br \/>\nfrom the dangers.<br \/>\nAs real as some of these threats can be, there are also <a href=\"?p=317\">false dangers<\/a><br \/>\nthat unscrupulous companies use as scare tactics to get you to buy ineffective products.<br \/>\nBe smart, and don&#8217;t fall into their traps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Protecting your personal information and privacy on the Internet can be a major challenge.
