For those that do use the command line interface (CLI), many use it infrequently. In this guide: we\u2019ll go through the basics of the command prompt, show you examples of how you can use its potential, and show you how to customize it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Familiarize Yourself with the Command Prompt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"windows command prompt guide 1\" src=\"http:\/\/mintywhite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/command-prompt01.png\" title=\"windows command prompt guide 1\" class=\"alignnone\" width=\"457\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before you start using the command prompt, I recommend you learn the basic shortcuts and commands. The first guide, listed below, shows you how to access the command prompt. If you\u2019re familiar with how to get to the command prompt already, you can skip this guide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mintywhite.com\/vista\/open-command-prompt-windows-quick-tip\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to open the command prompt<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic Commands<\/strong><br \/>\nNow you have the command prompt in front of you, let\u2019s go through a series of commands to help you navigate:<\/p>\n<p>Unless you changed your home or working directory, you\u2019ll see you start in your home folder (usually something like C:\\Users\\Rich)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Type <em>cls<\/em> to clear the command prompt<br \/>\n<strong>2.<\/strong> Type <em>ver<\/em> to view the Windows version you are currently using<br \/>\n<strong>3.<\/strong> Type <em>dir<\/em> to view the contents of the directory (folder) you are currently in<br \/>\n<strong>4.<\/strong> Type <em>cd<\/em> .. to change directory to the parent (folder above) i.e. from C:\\Users\\Rich to C:\\Users<br \/>\n<strong>5.<\/strong> Press the up arrow twice to list your second from last command (dir) and press Enter. You\u2019ll now be viewing the contents of the C:\\Users folder<br \/>\n<strong>6.<\/strong> Type <em>cd<\/em> Public to change to the Public folder<br \/>\n<strong>7.<\/strong> Type <em>md<\/em> test to create a \u201cTest\u201d directory in C:\\Users\\Public (optionally type dir again to view it in the listing)<br \/>\n<strong>8.<\/strong> Type <em>ren test test2<\/em> to rename the test folder to test2<br \/>\n<strong>9.<\/strong> Type <em>rd test2<\/em> to remove the directory you just created and renamed<br \/>\n<strong>10.<\/strong> Type <em>copy \u201cC:\\Windows\\System32\\Bubbles.scr\u201d BubblesCopy.scr<\/em> to copy the bubbles screensaver from the Windows directory to your Public directory (note: If you don\u2019t specify a path for the file, the directory you are currently working in is used)<br \/>\n<strong>11.<\/strong> Type <em>dir<\/em> to view the contents of the public folder again. Do you see the Bubbles.scr file?<br \/>\n<strong>12.<\/strong> Type <em>del<\/em> BubblesCopy.scr to delete the bubbles screensaver from your Public folder<br \/>\n<strong>13.<\/strong> Type <em>echo
