Despite the improvements, the operating system still takes up resources that didn\u2019t necessarily have to be used for normal functions. Let\u2019s have a look at a few of those you can turn off!<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Disable Search Indexing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most resource-hungry features of Windows 7 is search indexing, which creates a dictionary for your files, allowing you to perform faster searches. The problem is that, while it\u2019s creating that dictionary, it consumes your hard drive\u2019s read\/write speeds significantly, making it difficult to navigate through applications while indexing is taking place. That\u2019s why Microsoft included an option to turn this off.<\/p>\n<p>To effectively disable this feature, follow through this path: \u201cStart -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Services\u201d. Once in that window, scroll down to \u201cWindows Search.\u201d Right-click the item and click \u201cProperties.\u201d Within the window, select \u201cDisable\u201d under \u201cStartup type,\u201d like so:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"speed windows search\" src=\"http:\/\/imagecdn.maketecheasier.com\/2012\/04\/w7speed-windows-search.png\" title=\"speed windows search\" class=\"alignnone\" width=\"420\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click \u201cOK\u201d once finished. Once you reboot or stop the service manually, you won\u2019t have to worry about your hard disk being eaten alive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Disable Aero<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your computer gets kind of clunky while playing a movie or has difficulty emulating the graphics when you minimize or open a window, it\u2019s probably time to sacrifice the pretty effects that Windows 7 Aero brings with it and just live with simple bland colors. The interface will function similarly to how Windows 7 Starter does.
