The Question:<\/strong>Can I merge two internet connections so that I have doubled bandwidth? I have a DSL connection as well as a separate EVDO connection. I want to know if it is possible to merge the internet connections so that the bandwidth speed would be added to each other, resulting in increased bandwidth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Leo’s Response:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because this article was originally written a few years ago, the answer has actually changed from “mostly no” to “mostly yes, with a caveat”.<\/p>\n

There’s hardware now available – not even all that expensive – that will allow you to connect two internet connections to your local area network.<\/p>\n

But … there might be a catch.<\/p>\n

Depending on what it is you’re hoping to accomplish, you may be disappointed.<\/p>\n

Dual WAN Routers<\/strong><\/p>\n

What you’re looking for is often referred to as a “dual WAN” router. WAN is short for Wide Area Network (as opposed to your LAN or Local Area Network) and typically refers to the internet.<\/p>\n

Two connections to the internet.<\/p>\n

Two should be better than one, right?<\/p>\n

Mostly, the answer is yes, alhough there’s one scenario where the answer is “not so much”.<\/p>\n
