Some folks want a computer to be like a toaster \u2013 you plug it in and it just
\nworks. You stick a slice of bread in the slot, push a button and a minute or so
\nlater, you have toast. Sounds great, but a PC is much more complicated than a
\ntoaster \u2013 although some have envisioned toasters that connect to the Internet:<\/p>\n

A Windows 7 computer is a pretty complicated piece of electronic machinery, as
\nyou know if you\u2019ve ever built one from scratch. All of those parts and pieces –
\nprocessor, memory, hard drive, video and sound cards and other peripherals –
\nconnect through the main circuit board (motherboard) and have to work together
\nto load and run your operating system and applications. That means there is a
\nlot going on under the hood at any particular point in time.<\/p>\n

Those people who prefer simplicity don\u2019t want to know what\u2019s happening \u201cinside\u201d
\n– just as they might not want to know how the engine, transmission, and various
\nparts of their cars interact to make the wheels turn, or how the heart, lungs,
\nstomach, liver and so forth function to keep us living and breathing. But others
\nof us \u2013 call us control freaks or call us just curious \u2013 like to be aware of
\nwhat\u2019s going on beneath the surface so we can head off problems before they turn
\ninto bigger problems. That\u2019s where monitoring tools and utilities come in.<\/p>\n
