This week: Internet resources
\nto help me (and maybe you) get the best deal on gasoline
\n— and better mileage.<\/p>\n

Got Gas?<\/h3>\n

Regular-grade gasoline in and around Los Angeles just
\nbumped up to a painful $4.20 per gallon. And it happened
\njust as we decided to head 100 miles north to our beach
\nhouse [http:\/\/youtu.be\/rgT3Uln0jKw<\/a>] in
\nVentura and party with a few neighbors
\n[http:\/\/youtu.be\/1nek2U-nCxQ<\/a>]. (Yes, I took
\nsome time off, so these was no newsletter last week.)<\/p>\n

As I planned our trip, I consulted with Gas Buddy<\/a>
\n, a handy service that finds a list
\nof gas stations with the lowest prices. Just stick in your
\nzip code or state<\/a>
\n(Canadian provinces, too). There’s also a GasBuddy App<\/a>
\nyou can use on a smart phone while you travel.<\/p>\n

Here’s more help: Try GasPriceWatch<\/a>
\nfor nationwide
\nsearches. Just pop in your zip code or city and you’ll see
\nlistings in Google Maps. MapQuest Gas Prices<\/a>
\nworks the same way and is
\nuseful for searching on alternative energy sources, such
\nas biodiesel, electric, or hydrogen (sorry, nothing
\nnuclear), as well as regular fuels.<\/p>\n

The one thing not to try is the trip cost calculator<\/a>
\n — it’ll
\nmake you want to stay home.<\/p>\n

You say you’re traveling and never quite sure where the
\nstate you’re in is on the map? No problem (and no, I can
\nnever find half of those southern states either). Use
\nSheppard Software’s map quiz<\/a>
\nto practice.<\/p>\n

Quick Aside: Gas prices are high today, but I want to tell
\nyou my oh-you-think-you-have-it-bad version of walking to
\nschool in the snow. It was the oil crisis
\n[http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1973_energy_crisis<\/a>] in the
\nearly seventies. Gasoline shot up from about 30 cents a
\ngallon to more than $1.20; there wasn’t much available;
\nand tempers flared as we lined up around the block.<\/p>\n

Let Up on the Pedal<\/h3>\n

I’m guessing everyone with a driver’s license has their
\nown ideas about how to get better mileage. But at $4 a
\ngallon, it’s probably worth a look at a few tips.
\nFor a quick read, scan EHow’s “How to Get Good Gas Mileage
\nwith Your Car<\/a>
\n.” And
\nif you have the time, read Edmunds.com’s “Change Your
\nDriving Habits (and Save Gas!) Driving Tips<\/a>.” Edmonds also has a lengthier, more detailed
\nanalysis<\/a>
\n, and worth the read.<\/p>\n

I really like what Edmunds<\/a> has to offer. Its detailed
\nreport will give you some insight into the approach
\nI’m using: stepping up to the higher level membership at
\nCostco in order to buy gas from them. Costco’s gas prices
\nare generally 5 to 10 cents — and occasionally 20 cents
\n— per gallon less than other stations in the area. And
\nwhatever money you save on gas will disappear when you go
\ninto Costco to shop. (Come on, you know you never walk out
\nspending less then a $100.)<\/p>\n

Gas-Saving Controversies<\/h3>\n

Air Conditioning Even though it still cold in much of the
\ncountry, come summer, to help with gas mileage you may
\nconsider not using your air conditioner. There’s some
\ncontroversy over whether it’s more fuel efficient to drive
\nwith the car’s air conditioning on or to keep it off and
\nopen the windows.<\/p>\n

Way way back in 1986, The Straight Dope’s Cecil Adams said<\/a>
\nit doesn’t matter.
\nHowever, Bankrate<\/a> did what appears to be the most digging,
\nand its writer says it depends on
\nyour vehicle and the speed at which you’re driving. The
\nUniversity of Central Florida said, “repeated evaluation
\nat 65 miles per hour, our test car experienced 11% better
\nfuel efficiency
\n[http:\/\/www.fsec.ucf.edu\/en\/publications\/html\/fsec-en-19\/]
\nwith no A\/C and the windows open than using the air
\nconditioner.” Edmond’s<\/a> says it makes no difference
\n.<\/p>\n

No Idling Then there’s the dilemma of whether to turn off
\nyour vehicle’s engine at a coffee-and-donuts traffic
\nlight. You know the kind I mean: those monster
\nintersections where you wait 4 minutes for traffic in
\nevery direction to pass.
\nThe question is whether you waste more gas by idling for a
\nfew minutes — or by stopping and restarting the engine.<\/p>\n

One guy tested it<\/a>
\nover a month and saved gas by
\nturning off the engine. The Environmental Defense Fund<\/a>
\nendorses the practice<\/a>
\n,big time. And the U.S. Department of Energy slyly
\nimplies the same thing by saying, “Avoid Excessive Idling
\n[http:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/driveHabits.shtml]: Idling
\ngets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines
\ntypically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller
