I Can’t Get Online!<\/b><\/p>\n

The Annoyance<\/i><\/b> I can’t access the Internet. Outlook times
\nout, my browser says it can’t connect, and Norton’s
\nsecurity app won’t update itself. Now what?<\/p>\n

The Fix<\/i><\/b> You know what a schmendrick<\/a> is?
\nIt’s defined as someone who’s written a dozen
\ntroubleshooting articles, a book about PC annoyances, and
\nspent hours helping other sort out their computing tsuris,
\nand then can’t get online himself.<\/p>\n

Yep, it was me spending a day trying everything I’ve ever
\nrecommended — rebooting the router, rebooting the
\ncable-modem, and checking each and every ferschlumiting
\ncable. I used System Restore and tried WinSockFix<\/a>
\n(in Win 7, do it
\nmanually: From a command line, type netsh winsock reset
\ncatalog, hit Enter. Then type in netsh int ip reset
\nreset.log hit, hit Enter and reboot.).<\/p>\n

I tried standing in the corner of the office, whistling a
\nhappy tune while spinning on one leg. The dogs loved it,
\negging me on, but I was still offline.<\/p>\n

The rub, the utter frustration in this day-long effort,
\nwas that every so often I’d get online. That’s the bane of
\ntroubleshooting — inconsistent, varied results.<\/p>\n

Right about now my smarter-than-me tech friends are
\nsaying, no, probably shouting at the monitor, Idiot, Try
\nAnother Computer. Oh, yeah, right, of course. What a dope.
\nI did and, of course, same problem.<\/p>\n

The brouhaha ended when I called Charter and they found an
\nalmost sliced line at the pole, perfect for intermittent
\naccess.<\/p>\n

The lesson, which I’ll promptly forget, is — repeat after
\nme — include calling your ISP when troubleshooting. <\/p>\n

Quick: Turn Off my Monitor<\/b><\/p>\n

The Annoyance<\/i><\/b> I go to a lot of meetings and have to keep
\nmy notebook on, even though it’s not being used. I use a
\nscreensaver to turn off the monitor and not drain the
\nbattery. I’d rather a way to just turn the monitor on and
\noff. –Harry Montgomery, by e-mail.<\/p>\n

The Fix<\/i><\/b> Those meetings drone on, don’t they. Too bad you
\ncan’t play Portal 2<\/a>,
\nthe hot new game, while pretending to pay attention. I’ve
\ngot three freebie solutions.<\/p>\n

Some notebooks have a series of keystrokes that’ll blank
\nthe monitor. Find out how it’s done by digging into your
\nnotebook’s help file. It’ll give you something to do at
\nyour next meeting to keep you from dozing off.<\/p>\n

The tool I use is Saver Starter<\/a>
\n. It gives you
\nfour hotspots, one at each corner of the monitor; hover
\nthe mouse on a targeted spot to start the screensaver,
\nwhich you’ve configured to be a blank screen. The hotspots
\ncan be turned cold — keeping your mouse on the spot stops
\nthe screensaver from activating.<\/p>\n

If you don’t want anything fancy, and don’t want to bother
\nwith a screensaver, try Turn Off LCD<\/a>
\n. Click the icon on your desktop and the
\nmonitor’s off; hit the space bar and you’re back in
\nbusiness.<\/p>\n

I Hate the TouchPad!<\/b><\/p>\n

The Annoyance<\/i><\/b> I just got a new Asus work computer, but it
\nhas an accursed Touchpad<\/a>
\n. I hate the things
\n— they mess up my typing unless I’m super careful, which
\nI’m not. — Gavin Burgess, by way of Broad_band<\/a>
\n.<\/p>\n

The Fix<\/i><\/b> The very first thing I did on my ThinkPad was
\nsuccessfully disable the bloody TouchPad with TouchFreeze<\/a>
\n. The other freebie
\nto do the job is TouchpadPal<\/a>.
\nNeither worked for Gavin.<\/p>\n

Gavin also tried disabling the device
\n[http:\/\/seoroot.com\/blog\/computing\/hardware\/how-to-auto-disa
\nble-touchpad-on-synaptics.html<\/a>] — it didn’t help — nor
\ndid deleting the driver (nah, he said, it re-installs
\nitself, just like a virus).<\/p>\n

The clue for members of Broad_Band, a technical help
\nYahooGroup was the fact that the notebook’s built-in
\nfunction-key disabler on Gavin’s notebook didn’t work.
\nK-Squared and Ivan T. both suggested calling Asus tech
\nsupport. Problem solved: The notebook needed a free,
\nquick-to-download chipset update.<\/p>\n
