Major Companies Hacked<\/b><\/p>\n

Another hack attack: The bad guys gained access to the
\ndatabase that stores customers’ names and e-mail addresses
\nfor Capital One, JPMorgan, Brookstone, BestBuy, TiVo,
\nWalgreens, Kroger, and a long list of others<\/a>
\n.<\/p>\n

The breach occurred through Epsilon<\/a>
\n, the firm each of the companies used to
\nmanage their e-mail communication with customers.<\/p>\n

Chances are good that if you’ve corresponded with any of
\nthe companies, you’ll see phishing e-mails in your inbox.
\nThey’ll likely be messages for you to confirm a recent
\norder, or reconfirm or update a credit card.<\/p>\n

By this time in your computing career, I feel safe saying
\nyou’re sophisticated enough not to be suckered in by
\nphishing e-mails. But I’ll play it safe: If the e-mail
\nlooks authentic and asks you to click a link to go to the
\ncompany’s site, don’t do it. Instead, type the company’s
\nURL into your browser’s navigation field to go to the
\nsite.<\/p>\n

There’s nothing you can do to prevent a third party from
\nexposing your e-mail address. But there’s a handy trick to
\nmonitor if a company you’ve given an e-mail address to is
\nusing it to spam you. And then block it so you’ll never
\nsee it again.<\/p>\n

A Nifty Spam Tracking Trick<\/b><\/p>\n

Start using e-mail addresses that are specially — and
\neasily — coded. Create a new one for everything you sign
\nup for, things like newsletters, banking, coupon sites —
\nwhatever. If you receive an e-mail from that address with
\nanything other than what you asked for, you’ll know the
\ncompany’s been breached — or is selling your e-mail
\naddress to spammers.<\/p>\n

The technique is called plus addressing and the trick is
\nto create an e-mail with an extra character between the
\nreal e-mail address and the @ sign and domain. Don’t fret,
\nit’s easy to understand.<\/p>\n

Many ISPs let you do plus addressing, but I’ll use Gmail
\nto describe how it works.<\/p>\n

Let’s say your Gmail address is computeruser@gmail.com
\n(and for the reasons I’ll explain in a minute, you ought
\nto use Gmail). When you sign up for a newsletter, say,
\nSuperUser, use computeruser+superuser@gmail.com. Banking
\nwith Chase? computeruser+chase@gmail.com. Got the idea?<\/p>\n

Use a throwaway e-mail
\n to track spammers<\/b><\/p>\n

Gmail understands what you’re doing and the e-mail still
\nlands in your inbox.<\/p>\n

However, if you get something other than the newsletter at
\nthat address, you can stop it in its tracks. Just create a
\nfilter in Gmail (yep, I’ll get to that, too) that
\nautomatically deletes anything from
\ncomputeruser+superuser@gmail.com and you’ll never see it
\nagain.<\/p>\n

Of course, once you filter that specific address into the
\ntrash, you won’t see either the spam or the newsletter. If
\nyou still want the newsletter delivered, create a new plus
\naddress and resubscribe.<\/p>\n

Besides Gmail, I’ve tested plus addressing with EarthLink
\nand Yahoo
\n[http:\/\/help.yahoo.com\/tutorials\/mmail\/mmail\/mm_dispaddress1
\n.html] (they use a hyphen —
\ncomputeruser-superuser@yahoo.com instead of the plus
\nsign). Neither MSN nor AOL is smart enough to use it;
\nexperiment with your ISP to see if it works.<\/p>\n
