My purchase reaffirms <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moore's_law\">Moore&#8217;s Law<\/a> that  says PCs double in power every 18 months (technically, Moore referred to doubling the number of transistors on the CPU). So I am paying a third for equivalent power by today&#8217;s standards &#8211; 6 core Phenom II, 5570 Radeon graphics with a 1GB of video RAM, 1T hard drive, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, Blu-ray drive, memory slots and three USB ports on the front of the unit&#8230;..I wanted a loaded PC because it could be another eight years before I buy another one if they still exist!<\/p>\n<p>But does Moore&#8217;s law really apply to the user experience? I think not. Using that logic, the PC should be 4-6x as fast than the one I am replacing and of course that isn&#8217;t the case.  <a href=\"http:\/\/dodgeretort.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/New-monitor.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1685\" title=\"New monitor\" src=\"http:\/\/dodgeretort.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/New-monitor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" alt=\"\" width=\"365\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, so far, so good. The HP unit is up and running. I will detail more of the travails of working up a new system later in this post. But first, here&#8217;s the scoop on purchase experience.<\/p>\n<p>After exhaustive research for more than month <a href=\"http:\/\/dodgeretort.com\/technology\/buying-a-long-overdue-desktop\" target=\"_blank\">which I wrote about<\/a> Nov. 22, I made my purchase, surprisingly enough, at Staples. I had often casually glanced at Staples&#8217; slim selection of machines and thought they were pricey. For the exact same model, Staples <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/HP-Pavilion-Elite-HPE-410f-Desktop\/dp\/B003ZX87J0\/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1291676899&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">beat Amazon<\/a> by $45, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walmart.com\/ip\/HP-HP-HPE-410F\/15066065\" target=\"_blank\">Walmart mail order by $100<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shopping.hp.com\/webapp\/shopping\/search_request.do?searchType=keyword&amp;inkTonerSearchQuery=&amp;pageName=land&amp;Printer_Search_Query=&amp;Cartridge_Search_Query=&amp;printerOrCartridgeSearch=&amp;locationOfSearchQuery=&amp;returnUrlQueryString=&amp;searchQuery=410f\" target=\"_blank\">HP.com by $30<\/a>. And here&#8217;s the clincher: the machine I bought is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staples.com\/HP-Pavilion-Elite-HPE-410f-Desktop-PC\/product_905571?storeId=10001&amp;jspStoreDir=Staples&amp;cmSearchKeyword=410f&amp;fromUrl=home&amp;langId=-1&amp;catalogId=10051&amp;cmArea=SEARCH&amp;ddkey=StaplesSearch\" target=\"_blank\">now $920 at Staples online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Timing is everything I guess and I am very a happy camper. The HP units are getting good reviews and must selling well. And prices are creeping up Christmas gets closer from their lows in the sales just after Thanksgiving. I made the purchase on Saturday, Nov. 27, which was sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.<\/p>\n<p>I also bought a 23-inch <a href=\"http:\/\/reviews.cnet.com\/lcd-monitors\/samsung-syncmaster-xl2370\/4505-3174_7-33683882.html\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung Syncmaster XL2370HD LED TV\/Monitor<\/a> for $$230 at Staples. At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Samsung-P2370HD-23-Inch-1080p-Monitor\/dp\/B002DHS398\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1291677518&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon and most everywhere else , the same model is $280<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/Samsung Syncmaster XL2370HD LED TV\/Monito\" target=\"_blank\">At Staples online<\/a>,  it&#8217;s now $300! What&#8217;s more, the monitor is more than half the story.
