What if I do use a master password?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I certainly wouldn&#8217;t say incredibly stupid at all. But it&#8217;s definitely an<br \/>\nadditional risk, and one that needs to be understood.<\/p>\n<p>But you&#8217;re correct in considering physical security first. The problem is<br \/>\nthat people often assume they have more physical security than they actually<br \/>\ndo.<\/p>\n<p>And master passwords? Well, they&#8217;re nice, but they too have their<br \/>\nlimitations.<\/p>\n<p>   <a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center; color:#0C4599\">&bull;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Internet Explorer User?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IE&#8217;s situation is actually slightly worse. While there is no option in IE to<br \/>\nactually display saved passwords, there are several downloadable tools that<br \/>\nwill. The article <a href=\n\"http:\/\/ask-leo.com\/i_forgot_my_password_can_i_somehow_get_my_autologin_remembered_password.html\"><br \/>\nI forgot my password &#8211; can I somehow get my auto-login remembered password?<\/a><br \/>\ndiscusses them.<\/p>\n<p>So the risks are pretty much the same with Internet Explorer, and with fewer<br \/>\noptions to deal with that risk.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re at all wondering why this is even an issue, in Firefox do the<br \/>\nfollowing:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"spacedlist\">\n<li>Click on the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Options<\/strong> menu item<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Security<\/strong> tab<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Saved Passwords&#8230;<\/strong> button<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Show Passwords<\/strong> button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yes, the <strong>Show Passwords<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p class=\"imageinline\"><img src=\n\"http:\/\/images.ask-leo.com\/2009\/firefoxrememberedpasswords.png\" alt=\n\"Firefox showing me my passwords\" title=\n\"Firefox showing me my passwords\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A few clicks and all your passwords are visible.<\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;ve obscured my own information, that dialog shows a list of URLs,<br \/>\nUsernames and Passwords as remembered in my copy of Firefox. All we had to do<br \/>\nwas walk up to the computer follow the simple instructions above to make<br \/>\n<em>all passwords clearly visible<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That should have you thinking <em>very<\/em> carefully about your<br \/>\nsecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who can walk up to your computer can do that, and pretty darned<br \/>\nquickly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ask-leo.com\/is_it_safe_to_let_my_browser_remember_passwords.html\" target=\"_blank\">What can you do?
