Your username might well be publicly visible, but your password<br \/>\nshould be known only to you.<\/p>\n<p>Most systems also provide a mechanism whereby you can recover or reset your<br \/>\npassword should you forget it. They use a variety of means, but they all boil<br \/>\ndown to the same thing: they use one or more additional pieces of information<br \/>\nto validate that you are who you say you are, and then reset or reissue your<br \/>\npassword.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullQuote\">&#8220;It&#8217;s those &#8216;additional pieces of information&#8217; that<br \/>\npresent the greatest risk once your account has been compromised.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s those &#8220;additional pieces of information&#8221; that present the greatest risk<br \/>\nonce your account has been compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at some examples of what I mean, why they&#8217;re a risk, and what you<br \/>\nshould do about each in addition to changing your password.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ask-leo.com\/is_changing_my_password_enough.html\" target=\"_blank\">Examples<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[This post is excerpted with Leo&#8217;s permission from his <a href=\"http:\/\/technologizer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ask Leo<\/a> blog.]<\/p>\n<p><i>Leo Notenboom has been involved in the tech industry for nearly 30 years.
