Yes, it&#8217;s been an amazing time. But it&#8217;s also seen more than its share of misbegotten decisions, bizarre dramas, pointless hype, and lackluster products and technologies&#8211;often involving the same people and companies responsible for all the amazing stuff.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8211;with a respectful tip of the Technologizer hat to Business 2.0 and Fortune&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/business2\/101dumbest\/full_list\/\">101 Dumbest Moments in Business<\/a> and, of course, to Esquire&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esquire.com\/features\/dubious-achievements-2008\"> Dubious Achievement Awards<\/a>&#8211;let&#8217;s recap, shall we?<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-20728\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><em>*Yes, we&#8217;re aware that the decade didn&#8217;t really start until January 1st, 2001, and doesn&#8217;t end until December 31st, 2010. Shhhhh.<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>2000<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong>1. Well, at least <em>I<\/em> wasn&#8217;t killed and eaten by the roving hordes of homeless yuppies. Were you?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nWhouda thunk it? It turns out that the world has addressed the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Year_2000_problem\">Y2K problem<\/a> remarkably well. Those who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/politics\/law\/news\/2000\/01\/33419\">predicted<\/a> widespread starvation, utility failures, medical emergencies, and financial catastrophy probably feel a tad sheepish. And\/or disappointed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">2. And it only took them a decade to undo it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#000000;font-weight:normal;\">AOL announces that it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/technologizer.com\/2009\/08\/18\/press-releases\/8\/\">agreed to buy Time Warner<\/a> on January 10th, a media megamerger that creates an Internet content juggernaut that never quite gels. $260 billion of the combined companies&#8217; $300 billion market cap dwindles away over the next decade before Time Warner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/TECH\/12\/09\/aol.spinoff.future\/index.html\">rids itself of a vastly less important AOL<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-weight:normal;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21218  aligncenter\" title=\"Time Cover\" src=\"http:\/\/technologizer.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/aoltime.png?w=297&#038;h=392\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"392\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21215\" title=\"Transmeta logo\" src=\"http:\/\/technologizer.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/transmetalogo.png?w=120&#038;h=30\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"30\" \/>3. Hey, Robinson Crusoe was lonely, too.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nOn January 19th, top-secret startup Transmeta says it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/14848\/transmeta_unveils_crusoe_chip.html\">shaking up the chip world with its power-efficient Crusoe processor<\/a>. The CPU&#8217;s performance disappoints, Intel cooks up low-power technology of its own, and Transmeta faces <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/130200\/microprocessor_firm_transmeta_faces_delisting.html\">delisting from Nasdaq<\/a> before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techspot.com\/news\/32542-transmeta-sold-for-255-million.html\">selling out to a company<\/a> which <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/business\/news\/2009\/08\/transmetas-buyer-folds-vcs-still-steering-clear-of-semis.ars\">then goes out of business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">4. Not the first press release full of fiction, and not the last.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nPress-release service Internet Wire is hoaxed by a former employee\/community college student who <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/23-year-old-arrested-in-Emulex-hoax\/2100-1033_3-245192.html?tag=mncol\">uses it to distribute a fake release saying electronics firm Emulex is restating its earnings<\/a>. The company loses $2.5 billion of value and the student pockets $250,000 by shorting its stock before being arrested.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21216\" title=\"windowsme\" src=\"http:\/\/technologizer.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/windowsme.png?w=112&#038;h=80\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"80\" \/>5. The &#8220;Me&#8221; is short for Mediocre. Or maybe Meh.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nOn September 14th, Microsoft releases <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows_Me\">Windows Millennium Edition<\/a> (aka Windows Me).
