I know you’re not always happy with your PC, so here are three
\nfixes to some of the annoyances you’ve sent to me.<\/p>\n

Louder. No, Quieter<\/strong>
\n <\/strong>
\nThe Annoyance: <\/strong>I have lots of MP3s
\nI’ve ripped onto my hard drive from CDs. Nothing seems to
\nplay at the same volume level. When I play Copeland’s
\n"Fanfare," it’s loud enough to make the dog jump, yet
\nall of Dave Brubeck’s music is way too soft. <\/p>\n

The Fix: <\/strong>When you use Windows
\nMedia Player to burn music into<\/em> a CD, the trick is
\nto adjust–or normalize–the sound level as you’re
\nburning the MP3s to the CD. Do that from the Burn menu by enabling Apply volume level across tracks on the CD<\/em>.
\nNormalization doesn’t work in WMP when you’re ripping MP3s from a CD
\nto disk. Unfathomable, I know, but it’s Microsoft’s party. So use <\/span>FairStars CD Ripper<\/a> to do the job. The
\nfreebie does its job, normalizes the cuts, and handles plenty of file
\nformats, including WAV, MP3, WMA, and more obscure ones, such as APE
\nand VQF. <\/p>\n

\nUse FairStars DC Ripper to normalize while ripping.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

The hassle is what to do with all the music you’ve already<\/em> ripped. Microsoft’s WMP
\nfixes the problem by normalizing the volume as you play the
\nmusic. Look under View<\/em>, Enhancements<\/em>, Crossfading<\/em>,
\nand turn on Auto Volume Leveling. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this trick works only when you’re playing
\nthe music in WMP. But there’s a way to permanently normalize all your
\ncuts. Download MP3Gain<\/a>, a free–and very
\ncool–utility that analyzes and normalizes the sound levels of
\nMP3 files that you feed to it. Check out the FAQ<\/a>; you have to send MP3 files to MP3Gain<\/a> for it to do its work. <\/p>\n

Need a Quick Print? Just Right-Click<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Annoyance:<\/strong> I’m in Windows
\nExplorer and found the file I need to print. Isn’t it silly
\nto have to double-click the file to open the application and then find
\nthe Print command–just to print the file?<\/p>\n

The Fix:<\/strong> You’re
\nright, there is<\/em> a better way to do it, but the
\ndesigners at the Redmond Empire don’t make it obvious. The
\nfastest way to print a document, no matter what the application, is to
\nlet Windows Explorer do the deed. Right-click the file and select
\nPrint. Explorer will open the program that’s associated with
\nthe file extension and send the document to the printer.
\nExplorer’s neat and tidy, too, closing the app when
\nit’s done. <\/p>\n

<\/a>Leave My Freakin’ Icons Alone<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Annoyance:<\/strong> I like a messy
\ndesktop, okay? I don’t care if I haven’t used some of the icons for
\nyears. And no, I don’t want you to clean it up for me, thank you very
\nmuch. Now how do I turn the freakin’ thing off? [Actual note
\nfrom Judy Bass. –Steve<\/em>]<\/p>\n

The Fix:<\/strong> Yes, dear. Right-click
\non the desktop, select Properties<\/em>, choose the Desktop tab<\/em>, and click Customize
\nDesktop<\/em>. Uncheck "Run Desktop Wizard every 60
\ndays" to disable the wizard, then click OK twice.
