U.S. Virgin Islands Crippled by Ransomware

Virgin Islands Police Department Fell Victim to Cyber Attack

In April 2019, the U.S. Virgin Islands fell victim to two cyber attacks. The first was an unknown ransomware variant that targeted police department servers holding internal affairs data and citizen complaints. The ransom demands were not disclosed; although officials reported they did not pay the ransom and are still working with the FBI to restore their networks.

But it gets worse. Another attack targeted the territory’s water department, resulting in a $2.3 million email scam. As a result, Water and Power Authority employees are taking cyber security training to increase their knowledge on how to spot suspicious emails.
