Texan Town Suffers Ransomware Attack
The City of Del Rio, Texas was infected with ransomware on January 10, 2018. This cyber attack led to servers at City Hall being disabled and all city departments losing internet access. This left employees unable to log into the systems, meaning all electronic services were at a standstill. Fortunately, city employees were able to maintain operations, by completing job duties the old-fashion way — with a pen and paper.
City officials have reported the cyber attack to the FBI and are working to resolve the situation as quickly and painlessly as possible. The City is asking for patience from the public while they work to get systems back online.
At this time, a few things remain unclear. First, no one has disclosed what ransomware variant infected the City of Del Rio’s systems. It also remains uncertain how officials plan to restore systems — meaning, if they have backup files available or if they’re entertaining the thought of paying the hacker’s undisclosed ransom demands. Lastly, since the city is still in remediation mode, they have yet to investigate if the attack led to the exposure of employee and/or customer data.
