Ransomware Attack Targeted North Bend Police Department

City Networks Riddled with Ransomware

An unknown ransomware variant hit the City of North Bend a mere weeks ago.  The cyber attack originally targeted the North Bend police department; however, since the city’s networks are intertwined, the malicious software spread beyond its initial target.  The ransom note demanded a payment of $50,000 and was addressed to the North Bend Police Department.  Fortunately, the City of North Bend keeps updated backups, which were not impacted by the cyber attack.  City officials were able to work with the FBI to restore their systems using these backups and did not pay the ransom demands.

According to the FBI’s investigation, the ransomware originated in Romania; however, the exact parties involved with the ransomware distribution have not been identified.
